In previous posts I've spoken about how important it is to purchase resveratrol, and supplements in general, from reputable suppliers. As many of you know I personally take resveratrol produced by RevGenetics. Not only do I believe their product is superior to most, but the company is run by a very stand-up guy, Anthony Loera, the company's President.
I have contacted Anthony on several occasions and each time was shocked by the quickness of his reply. I recently asked him if he would be willing to answer some questions for me in an interview format to post here on MyResveratrolExperience.com and his response was far beyond what I had expected. I truly appreciate the time he put in to answering my questions in such great detail.
Before I get to the interview let me first say Anthony is not only a businessman but a true benefit to the community. He took it upon himself to try and help a fellow Immortality Institute member, TheFirstImmortal (TFI), battle his bout with terminal cancer. An interview with Anthony Loera, President of RevGenetics:
How did you first hear about Resveratrol?
I first heard about resveratrol in early 2006, and started taking it myself around October 2006.
How did you get the idea to start RevGenetics?
There is actually a very personal story about this, but I will skip it for now as it is quite lengthy and begins years back when I used to work at Vitas Hospice.
I began at some point in 2006, to go through the studies using resveratrol because of personal reasons. In the studies, there appeared to be a very large discrepancy regarding dosage on animals, compared to what was available on store shelves.
The fact was that none of the supplements on store shelves had enough to make an impact on people. This was apparent after I read the study regarding low bioavailability in humans that was published in 2004. Basically, in that study it was shown that most of a 25mg dose of resveratrol was simply flushed out of a person's system.
When that sunk in, I called a friend of mine that had his Ph. D. from UCLA. I asked him about resveratrol. At the time he was not sure what I was talking about, since he was doing some research regarding the immune system, and supplements were not on his radar at all. I convinced him to take a look. A couple weeks later, he called me back letting me know about the impressive number of studies done on the molecule, and that he was very impressed by all the positive results in the studies. He started to dig into the studies, and apparently he got hooked on the research.
This set the ball in motion, initially the idea was to find good, clean sources of resveratrol to provide for family and friends. Once we had some sources, they were tested, and provided to people we knew. The fact is that initially I was not looking to create a business, I was simply trying to provide this to folks that I knew, really needed it.
I remember the first time I ordered too much resveratrol, and decided to see if anyone on the internet felt like I did about resveratrol. The initial information I started to get from people was very positive, so I then decided to partner up with a private investor, and launched the first product, the RevGenetics R500 capsules. The first 500mg trans-resveratrol capsule on the market was released in January of 2007.
As time went by, we received a lot of feedback from our customers and friends. This feedback has really changed the way we do business a few times, and we really appreciate it. We even appreciate the down-right tough criticism we get from folks. It helps us understand what we are missing. Now we have a few more resveratrol products such as the only 1000mg capsule, micronized resveratrol, the only 500mg micronized capsule, and the only supplement aimed at telomerase activity to help support telomere health, lengthening and DNA repair.
Where do you believe the future of Resveratrol products and research is headed?
I believe resveratrol will be seen in the following:
Supplements:
I believe you will see supplements with higher amounts coming from the big supplement makers, and many folks will start making micronized resveratrol.
Cosmetics, from lipsticks to facial creams:
There are some very expensive creams that already have it, and I expect lower cost creams to start adding it as well. When you see a new product with resveratrol, you will realize the powder that resveratrol brings to a marketed product. Many cosmetics that currently have this ingredient are priced according to the marketing value that resveratrol brings, not resveratrol's actual cost. In a few years you will see pricing drop, as this becomes more prevalent in this industry.
Health Foods:
Many new drinks will see the addition of resveratrol in lower doses, much of them may do it for marketing, and some will add it because of competition. I already see competing companies adding this, for example: Mona Vie has announced a Mona Vie resveratrol version, after the Vivix resveratrol liquid was announced just last month by Shaklee. For the most part, this will benefit the consumer, and we may actually start seeing resveratrol in the amounts that I feel, can make a difference in humans.
Animal Feed:
Yes that is right, if you have very expensive animals, it's likely you will see resveratrol in some exceptional feeds. The fact that resveratrol appears to work better in animals than in humans will likely make this booming industry.
Alcoholic beverages:
Yes, I believe there is already a wine company adding additional resveratrol to their products, who knows, it may catch on for other alcoholic beverages.
Are there any common misconceptions regarding Resveratrol you would like to clear up?
Resveratrol is not the one and only supplement that you should take:
Resveratrol, although very good, relies on decent nutritional intake. Please be aware that taking resveratrol will not be helpful without the regular use of vitamins, or minerals in your system. Some people decide to take resveratrol, and forget to take other "boring" vitamins and minerals including calcium and protein, that really help in the daily health and repair of your body.
Resveratrol stability:
Resveratrol is wonderful, as long as you keep it away from UV light (sun light). Normal lights in your home, should not affect it. Many have heard that ambient oxygen and heat will degrade resveratrol. Resveratrol is degraded as much (and as slowly) as many other supplements or multivitamins people have in their medicine cabinets. This simply means that you will need to check the expiration dates on your labels.
Resveratrol Dose:
The following of course is my opinion, based on talking to folks that are simply much smarter in this area than I am, as I do not consider myself an expert, but here are the nuggets regarding dosage that I am left with after reviewing the information regarding dosage.
There are different ways to estimate a dose, namely HED and BSA methods when trying to estimate a human dose from a mouse study, but the fact remains, you usually use these methods when you do not have actual human plasma data to work with. The HED and BSA methods also do not take into account differences in metabolism phases between species. So what must be done is to consider the plasma data.
If you consider the resveratrol absorption data from Sirtris, and the data from the human dose escalation study by Boocock, you are left with an interesting mouse to human ratio. The magic *ratio number is "1.3".
This simply means that a person may hypothetically consider the mouse dosage in a study as it is usually given as milligrams per kilogram of body weight, then multiply this by 1.3 to get a hypothetical estimate for a human regarding whatever benefit or detriment the study may show.
Again, recently I saw a study that stated the following (and I am paraphrasing the following): A mouse was given 5mg/kg for 14 days, and then a heart attack was induced. The mouse's heart was shown to be protected from damage and recovered better than one without resveratrol. If I were to consider the study and try to hypothetically find out what the estimated dosage would be for me, I would do the following:
First calculate how many kilograms I weigh. My 175 pounds is calculated as 79.54 kilograms. Again, the 5m/kg was given by the study, so I will use it in the calculation. I will then multiply 79.54 by 5mg to get a total of 397.7mg. I now would need to take into account the plasma ratio of 1.3 and viola!
397.7 X 1.3 = 517.01mg.
The hypothetical dose that may help me to recover from my fictitious lab induced heart attack... is 517.01mg a day, and I would have to take this for 14 days prior to walking into a lab that would induce my heart attack. Of course, lab induced heart attacks are rare in the real world, so this scenario is not likely.
*(This ratio I have to attribute to an individual that goes by the name of "niner" that produced this at Imminst.org. I was convinced by his argument, and believe that the ratio is a good conservative number regarding dosage.)
Here at RevGenetics, our dosage suggestions are as follows and should cover most benefits:
- A Minimum suggested dose of 250mg-300mg a day.
- A Maximum suggested dose of 500mg for every 50pounds, when using regular resvertrol.
- A Maximum suggested dose of 500mg for every 100pounds, when using micronized resvertrol.
- A Maximum suggested dose of 500mg for every 150pounds, when using micronized resvertrol in a liquid emulsion, mixed in with a milk product, or whey protein shake.
Resveratrol Issues:
We have seen that many resveratrol products that have a purity of 50% or less, typically have issues regarding a laxative effect (like a fiber pill) when taking more than 600mg. These 50% purity products have drawn some fire recently, and we typically let folks know that this might be a possibility, especially if you plan to take more than 300mg a day. Most folks will not have issues, but for those that do, we ask you to consider 98% resveratrol purity (or better) if you have experienced these things in the past with other products on the market.
A simple test to see if you resveratrol is not 50% purity? Simply break open a capsule, or liquid capsule that you have. High purity 98% resveratrol typically is white in color. If your resveratrol is dark green or brown, it likely is not high purity resveratrol, and maybe of low quality.
We sell both types, so it's simple to identify a 50% pure capsule from a 99% purity capsule.
Are you currently taking Resveratrol? If so, in which form and what type of delivery method do you use?
I am taking the equivalent of about 2000mg of regular resveratrol a day. Sometimes I take it in a whey protein shake using micronized powder, sometimes in capsule form which is just very quick to do.
I have calculated the particular benefits that I would like to see for myself, and it remains at around 2000mg. My cardiovascular system is fine, and it's not why I presently take resveratrol.
You have a new product called Astral Fruit; what made you develop this instead of other supplements?
Many supplements are already on the market at good prices, we try to look for things that can make powerful impact on maintaining health. We also look for herbs that are a bit rare and pass the tests done at the independent lab for safety and purity.
At the beginning of the year, a few customers asked about a telomerase supplement and we found out again (much like resveratrol), that there is no one providing a place to buy something like this, in any decent quantity that could make a difference.
Our customers again, changed the way we do business, by providing an exceptional opportunity to be the first to provide a supplement to support telomere lengthening, chromosome health and DNA repair.
Do you have any new products in the pipeline that you can share with us?
We have a few things in the pipeline, and you might see a couple of these in the next 2-3 months:
We will be providing a new Pfizer nitrogen bubble capsule with micronized resveratrol and 2 other ingredients.
We will be providing nano resveratrol powder in small quantities. This will be perfect for sublingual or "buccal" delivery. Because of the particle size the absorption is increased over micronized resveratrol, and only very little will be needed.
Our initial skin product will be available as well.
We have seen some great things happen over the last 20 months, we hope the next 20 months allow us to develop a few things that no one has seen before.
In short, we simply hope to give you the ability to maintain your health and appearance for a long time to come.
