Is Resveratrol the Next Big Catch-Phrase?
The term Natural is my #1 rated food marketing term of the past decade. Not only is it on almost every piece of food packaging, but it's even popular with fast food companies like Pizza Hut who just introduced, "the Natural Pizza." Kudos to them for producing a higher quality fast food product!
Is the next big marketing term going to be Polyphenols, Antioxidant, or Resveratrol? Welch's Grape juice is now touting (I believe in a good way using food genius Alton Brown) the health benefits of grape juice by using terms like polyphenols and antioxidant. It seems the next craze has begun...
I've always found a great interest in marketing trends and the techniques used by large companies, and small companies alike, to get their product into the hands of consumers. The health food market is continuing to grow as consumers are becoming better educated on what healthy foods are. Cooking with lard is no longer an option in most households. The health conscious consumer will create a frenzy among marketing companies looking to ride the next big health fad wave.
Remember when you were in high school and you had that favorite band you loved? You know, the band no one else really knew about. Then, the next thing you know they are on the radio and have gone mainstream. You felt broken hearted, betrayed, and did one of two things: claimed to everyone who started listening to the band that "you" were there first! Or you stopped listening to them because the band was no longer special to you any more.
Let's not forget about those who "jump on the bandwagon" either. This is a large market segment as more people are followers rather then leaders or innovators. If it makes me feel better and possibly live longer then I am fine with jumping on and taking a ride.
Don't be mad or spiteful just because the rest of the world is waking up to what healthy eaters already know. Healthy, natural foods, provide some of the best nutrition. Spread the word when you can and lead by example. Just remember, it's ok to eat that cheeseburger or chocolate cake every once in a while.
Now let me adjust the tone of this article a bit. You may think terms such as bandwagon and followers are a little harsh. However, there is nothing wrong with someone who falls into this category. It's worse to be someone who isn't willing to try something new just because everyone else is already doing it. Ego often trumps common sense and it's important we don't let it get in the way of our health!
So are peanut companies now going to place the phrase, "A great source of Resveratrol" on their labels? It may sound crazy but I don't think we are too far off from this already. Labeling food is the most important part of marketing it. As companies compete for market share they will use terminology that is catchy, trendy, and healthy sounding.
"My prediction is by 2010 at least one major food company (possibly many more) will use the term resveratrol as part of their marketing campaign."
What do you think the next big health food marketing trend will be? Do you think resveratrol will go more mainstream? Comment below!
