With RevGenetics releasing their newest resveratrol supplement it was only a matter of time before taking it for a test run!
I recently received my first bottle of Nitro 250 Resveratrol from RevGenetics and I am excited about the prospects of a more bioavailable form of resveratrol. More bioavailability means we can take less and get the same, or a greater, amount of resveratrol into our system. Bioavailability is at the center of the dosage debate. More on dosage in a future post.
I've been taking 1000mg of Micronized Resveratrol on training days and 500mg on off days for the past few months. On Wednesday I switched to the Nitro 250 capsule. For now I will only be taking 1 capsule per day as it is the recommended dose. After a few weeks on Nitro 250 I will look into increasing my dosage on training days. I'll give you a progress report later next week.
Nitro 250 is made up of 250mg of 99% micronized resveratrol with an average particle size of 1.5 microns. The resveratrol is mixed with Tween 80, Lecithin, and delivered in a liquid Licap Nitrogen Gas Capsule for increased absorption and greater stability.
What is Tween 80?
In the scientific community Tween 80 is known as Polysorbate 80. It is used as an emulsifier in foods and for the delivery of medications. Click for more information on Tween 80.
What is Lecithin?
Lecithin is a fatty, brownish yellowish substance naturally produced by our bodies and can also be found in cabbage, cauliflower, and various other food products. Lecithin helps our cells remain supple and flexible allowing them to adjust to our blood flow. Click for more information on Lecithin.
What are Licaps?
Licaps are Liquid Capsules by Capsugel. They are capsules made for liquid based oral medications and supplements. They are specifically made to not have a band sealing the capsule shut and are easy to swallow. Click for more information on Licaps.
The RevGenetics website has a detailed description of Nitro 250 with research supporting the benefits of Tween 80 mixed with resveratrol.
It's important to know and understand what we put in our bodies. Take some time exploring the links in this article and familiarize yourself with the terminology and substances.

Hey, sounds more and more like a copy of Longevinex.

Nope, it's not a copy. Nitro250 has more micro-res per cap and is the only one with tween 80.

This kind of delivery system will not improve bioavaiability. Tweens (60, 80 etc) and Lecithin are emulsifiers. The whole point of using emulsifiers is to get a poorly water soluble material (i.e. Resveratrol) into solution. This cannot be achieved simply by adding the dry ingredients in a capsule and expecting them to emulsify on opening of the capsule. That requires a much more complicated system. Otherwise this would have been done long ago if it were easy. The best method for delivery is through a suspension of some sort.

This uses a liquid Licap from Capsugel. It is emulsified in tween 80. We do have dry capsules as well though, maybe you are confusing the new product with these older products?

Hi Markus. Well, I finally started a few weeks back. There's been a couple glitches in starting but I started on the 500 mg. Unfortunately I haven't been consistent due to a couple of event. The one thing I have determined is my metabolism has increased, my calorie burn rate is higher than pre-resveratrol. I'd say during strenuous excercise there's a 25% improvement. As you know that has been my primary motivator with this. I'm still taking the Energy Greens and have also added Glucosamine for my joints. I had a hip flexor strain that I had to work through so I'm continuing with the glucosamine since it helped with my recovery. I've put in a re-order so the experiment continues.
Congratulations on the birth of your daughter. This has got to be so exciting {and tiring :)}for you and your wife. Merry Christmas and Good Life for a new year. I'll be checking back in with you in the new year.

Hi Cindy,
Thanks for visiting and welcome to MRE.
I don't have any personal experience or know of anyone who used resveratrol for Multiple Sclerosis, but I have come across a few articles here and there.
I found these on Google:

I know you may have already read these articles and studies but perhaps there is something new in there for you.
If anyone else knows anything please post below and forward the information to Cindy.

It might be worth reading about Tween. I just came across this on Google:
www.biotivia.com/blog/2009/01/urgent-health-alert-warning-supplements-containing-a-compound-called-tween-are-not-fda-approved-and-may-be-harmful-to-humans/
anyone with any ideas on the information?
Cheers

Hi Billy,
Polysorbate 80 is contained in ice cream that you buy at your local supermarket, and that your kids eat. It is contained in many other products as well such as cottage cheese, pickles in a jar(yes pickles!), Shortenings, whipped toppings, BBQ Sauce, etc.
Even the common Metamucil Fiber Therapy has Polysorbate 80 (Tween 80), and has had it for ages.
Polysorbate 80 (Tween 80) is often used in ice cream to prevent milk proteins from completely coating the fat droplets. This allows them to join together in chains and nets, to hold air in the mixture, and provide a firmer texture, holding its shape as the ice cream melts.
Consumer Labs finds Polysorbate 80 acceptable as well as it is contained in CoQ10 supplements:
http://www.consumerlab.com/ingredients/Coenzyme_Q10%20/coq10/
If Consumer Labs finds Polysorbate 80 (Tween 80) acceptable in many CoQ10 supplements, and Biotivia uses Consumer Labs for safety testing. Why would they disagree with them regarding this item?
Does Biotivia test every batch with Consumer Labs anymore, or did they only consider them once in 2007 and have since parted ways concerning safety?
Maybe that is a question that needs to be asked about Biotivia products to see if safety is continually tested through Consumer Labs on a batch to batch basis, or if it has not been tested anymore since 2007.
I truly don't know about any competitors testing, however we do test every batch for safety.

Are you a herbal company as you claim or a chemical company? Also, what is your obsession with Biotivia. I notice that every time they make a change to their site you copy them. I am one of their customers who switched from your product because it made me ill.
Abstract
Effects of Tween 80, a nonionic surfactant, on size and number of chylomicrons (CM) secreted during lipid absorption in the rat model are reported. Fasted rats were loaded with either 154 m NaCl or 25% (w/w) olive oil emulsion in 154 m NaCl with 0, 0.1, 1 or 10% (w/w) Tween 80. After 3 h, either mesenteric lymph or blood was collected and their triacylglycerol-rich lipoprotein fraction (Sf>20 and Sf>400, respectively) isolated. Triacylglycerol (TAG) and apolipoprotein B48 (apoB48) concentrations in the lipoprotein fractions were assayed and their fluxes (lymph) calculated. TAG:apoB48 ratios, indicative of CM size, were determined. The data support the hypothesis that fat loading is accommodated mainly by increased average size, rather than number, of CM. Co-administration of Tween 80 with olive oil resulted in a significant increase in CM apoB48 secretion into the mesenteric lymph duct and in an increased concentration of apoB48 in the blood (Sf>400). Also, Tween 80-treated groups exhibited smaller mean CM size relative to the olive oil only group in both lymph and blood. The observed effect on CM size and number did not appear to be dose dependent at concentrations of Tween 80 above 0.1% (w/w). Incorporation of Tween 80 in the diet at 1 or 10% (w/w) concentrations reduced the TAG concentration in the stools; however, a significant increase in water content was observed at 10% (w/w) concentration. In conclusion, Tween appeared to have a toxic or irritating effect on the gastrointestinal system. More importantly, the effect of Tween 80 on size and number of CM is a condition that favours a delay in their clearance rate.

Barbara,
I just checked, and you are no customer I can find in any records of ours.
Here is my answer to this again:
The study Biotivia talks about is about injected tween, not orally taken tween. In fact orally taken tween has never been found to have issues, that's why it is found in metamucil and CoQ10 supplements.
Just like the FDA will never approve Biotivia's resveratrol supplement products to be injected, we will not agree to injecting yourself with tween 80, even if it is found in many Consumer Lab's tested products.
Again, this is a supplement, and like many healthy foods, cough medicines, ice creams, etc... you would never inject this into yourself.
The Sigma Aldrich company only offers chemicals to labs, they do not offer supplement grade or food grade polysorbate 80 to companies that make CoQ10 supplements. The capsules were made by Capsugel(c), these folks are experts at supplement formulations and safety.
The Sirtris data shows that Micronized Resveratrol with tween is absorbed better than regular micronized resveratrol. Although Biotivia has made claims that others do not have data, I still do not see any public information on their website that Biotivia products are FDA approved, tested by Consumer Reports for every batch, or even after 2007. I can't find anything that states that Biotivia products are clinically tested as well. So if you can provide that information to us Katherine, that would be helpful.
Again Consumer Labs finds Polysorbate 80 acceptable as well as it is contained in CoQ10 supplements:
http://www.consumerlab.com/ingredients/Coenzyme_Q10%20/coq10/
