Sirtris Pharmaceuticals, a division of GlaxoSmithKline, has recently announced they have halted trials of their SRT501 formula. As pointed out by a reader of this blog, you can find more information by reading this article published in the Wall Street Journal. They also have a follow up piece on the WSJ blog that can be found here: WSJ Health Blog

Hi Markus,
I spoke to one of the leading researchers on Resveratrol. His comments...
"I'm not particularly concerned by the information that is currently available (and in fact, just reassured my wife that my mother-in-law can continue taking Vindure). You are right that the dosage was 5000 mg/day of the proprietary formulation claimed to give higher peak serum levels. It's also the same dose that was used in several completed trials for diabetes. In this case, the problem was the development of cast nephropathy in 5 of 24 multiple myeloma patients - it's a normal complication of the disease and the question is whether the incidence was increased or accelerated, or if this was just bad luck. It's impossible to judge without knowing more about the patients (especially how carefully they were examined at enrollment) - hopefully GSK will release more information."
I'm also continuing to take my Vindure!
Warmly,
Barry

Hi Barry,
Thanks for the response. I was hoping someone would point out the potential realities of that study. Hopefully Sirtris will provide their own follow up with a detailed explanation of the results they have gathered from their research thus far. It also seems like Sirtris is less focused on the SRT501 and much more focused on their NCE's.

Thanks for this. I'm always amazed at the quality of stuff that goes on your site. I've been a lurker for a while! I don't think that this study is reason to stop taking resveratrol supplements.

Hi Markus,
More info on the Glaxo/Sirtris Resveratrol study....
This was apparently reported incorrectly. Glaxo did NOT cancel the study. The same researcher I quoted above told me that they only removed the patients with kidney problems, which are not unusual for patients with this form of cancer. He also told me that he has seen amazing effects of Resveratrol on various tumors in animals, and that he would personally take massive does of Resveratrol if he were in that situation.
Pharma is a highly competitive business, and we have to take many press reports with a grain of salt since all the manufacturers are constantly trying to discredit their competitors.
Warmly,
Barry Yarkoni

Hi Barry,
Thanks for the information. It is definitely important to hear all sides of the story and to be extra cautious in evaluating them when you are dealing with the Pharma industry.
I post information like this so people can see the "good and the bad" of what is being said about resveratrol. This way, people are able to make more informed decisions and perhaps do more due diligence on their own.
Thanks again.

I have been taking res-juventa for 7 years now. For the first years my relatives in Spain have been sending it to me and now it it also available in the US. Together with my balanced nutricion and regular exercising I had great health effects in that the metabolic age of my organs is now about measured at 35 years while I am almost 50. I think it is very important to take a natural resveratrol product which is made from the pulp, seeds, skin and stems of Spanish blue grapes. Also, I think that besides cis- and transresveratrol, the ingredients of quercetin, pterostilbene, catechin, gallic acid, malvidin, peonidin, petunidin, delphinidin and cyanidin play an important role. Whe will we see reports on these great natural elements?
